Directions to the Trailhead

From NYS Thruway Exit 19 (Kingston)

Where to start the trail from Kingston’s Exit 19 on the NYS Thruway For 27.6 miles, keep going west on NY 28. In West Kill, take State Route 42 north for 7.3 miles and turn right onto County Highway 6 (Spruceton Road). Just before the road stops, you must drive 6.8 miles to reach the lot on the right. 

From State Route 23A’s Lexington 

Follow State Route 42 south for 4.1 miles. Turn left on County Hwy 6 (Spruceton Road) in West Kill. It will be 6.8 miles before you see a parking lot on your right.

Parking Tip: The allowed parking lot is on the right, and after you’ve passed the Spruceton Trail Parking Lot on the left, Don’t leave your car at the end of the road. 

How to Have a Successful Hike

Slow down. The road can get rough at times. The easy-to-handle pace is best. Take short breaks when you need to.

Stay Hydrated:  Drink a lot of water, especially when going uphill, to keep from getting thirsty. Remember to bring climbing poles. They can keep you steady and keep your knees safe. 

Check the Weather:  The mountains can get very cold or hot quickly. Put on the right clothes and bring extra layers. 

Leave No Trace: Do not leave any trace behind. Take everything you bring with you and damage the environment as little as possible. The trail’s best part is the Buck Ridge Lookout, which is just below the top and is one of the most exciting spots. You can see a lot of the nearby mountains from this high point. It’s a great spot to stop, enjoy the view, and take pictures. Do you recommend this walk for first-timers?

The trail is intermediate to complex because it is long and has a lot of stairs that go up and down. Beginners who are in good shape can go on the walk. It is suggested that you know how to walk simply.

Can I bring my dog?

If the event leader says so ahead of time, dogs are welcome. Tell Marv Freedman you want to bring your pet.

What should I bring in food?

You should bring water or a sports drink (1 to 2 liters), snacks, sunglasses, layers of clothes, gaiters (optional), hiking poles (recommended), and a torch.

Is food going to be served?
